A Little Thrift Store Re-do & Prayer Request

Hi Blog pals, I hope each of you are doing well today......
I tell you, I sure would appreciate your prayers......I have not felt well the last couple of days......
Been sick off and on for a month now......
I had chills, and a fever last night and coughing.....lots of coughing!
I've been on antibiotics for a week.....and Saturday, Sunday & Monday I felt much better.....
actually felt good! Then Tuesday morning......bam! the coughing was back again...... :(
I suppose if I'm not improved by morning, I will need to make a Dr.'s appt.
DH & I don't have a family physician......thankfully,we are hardly ever sick .....but when we do have something wrong.....it's difficult to know what to do.....
Anyhow.....here's a picture of a recent thrift store find......I believe it was actually an ice bucket
made to look like a firkin (sugar bucket).......

Here's the After:

I painted it a beige/mustard color.....I call Thistle....

Then I did a bit of distressing and finished it off with a little "antiquing" or rather "primming" I should say!

What do ya think?

I'm going to go try to take a lil' nap to see if that'll help me to feel better.....I sure pray so....

Table Finished!

Remember I posted this picture a few days ago of a new table DH had never made before?

Well.....Look now!
I'm REALLY pleased with how it turned out!!
I wasn't sure of the color....so I did a little mixing with some paint I already had.....
I painted it then waited............
When it dried it turned out a beautiful shade of deep blue!
The color is something like a midnight blue color......would that be considered a Williamsburg Blue?
I'm trying to come up with my own names for the colors that we paint our furniture......
What would you think would be a good prim/colonial name for this color?

I also have another table just like this one done in black......yet to finish.

Then DH made two petite versions of this table....they're really cute and

would go anywhere.....

I'll post pics of them when they are finished....

We have an order to build a large cabinet for a lady by March..... :)

DH has it almost finished and ready for paint.....

She wants it this old aqua color like the cannery piece we have on our Picture Trail

site......but her piece is some larger.....

Once we finish it......we'll be back to getting more stuff ready for the upcoming show

we'll be doing (also in March).....time is drawing near!

Good Morning Monday!

Good Monday Morning!
Hope you all are well!
Well, thank the Lord the sun is shining brightly today!
Don't know why but that seems to give me a lift......even though it's pretty chilly outside.....at
least it looks warm!
I didn't sleep really well lastnight.....could have been theFajita Nachos I ate at the Mexican place after church lastnight......it was so much food....I brought half of it home!
I have a very hearty appetite,especially when it comes to mexican food (could eat it every single day) and I could not eat anywhere close to all of it at one sitting!
Anyhoo....I was up at 3:30AM with a teeny touch of tummy troubles.....sorry if TMI (too much info)!!
I got up and took a shower at that time and then went back to sleep at 4:00 AM and slept 'til
nearly 7:00AM.....DH said I was sawing some serious logs.....lol! I must have slept better in those three hours than all night long!! I told DH that was payback for all the forests I'd listened to him cut down in his sleep over the years! hee..hee.... :)

I guess it will be woodshop work today.......we've got to get enough pieces accumulated to take to the show we're doing in March....we're gettin' there a little at a time.....but at least we are gettin' there!
I've already washed the breakfast dishes, got DS's lunchbox ready,made the bed, fed the cats, put a load of clothes in the dryer, one in the wash and one to fold....emptied the bathroom trash cans and took out the kitchen trash,did my Bible reading in Proverbs....Chapter 22, checked the fire in the wood stove out in the wood shop, called the gentleman back at the Amish place we buy lumber from and got the beadboard ordered for the furniture pieces and DH said I could order extra for the kid's bathroom re-do......Yeah!!
That was what I'd asked for as a Christmas present......I want their itty-bitty bathroom (walls) covered with beadboard from ceiling to floor......then painted.....maybe an avocado green color....
don't say "eeeeewwwww" as you read this.....lol! My friend/good customer painted her hallway this color and it is absolutely GORGEOUS with all her black framed pics & prim stuff on the walls!!
Wow! It's wonderful!
I'd like for us to make our own trim and paint it a shade of white or vanilla......
The sink top....around the basin.....is a pukey rose/mauve color.....we all dislike it very much.....
we can't find a pre-made one piece the right size....so we're going to have to do something else......I'd love to do a distressed wood-stained top.....heavily coated with that marine polyurethane (protect from the moisture) and then drop in a really unique basin for the sink.....
don't know if DH will go for the sink part.....it may just have to be a white drop-in.....I still think that would work too.....I thought about even a pedestal sink.....and then DH could make one of those over the commode stands(for the much needed storage)that has a place for a neat basket for the kid's toiletries, and a couple of doors maybe....to hide towels and washcloths.....

Before I go.....Do any of you watch this show on the Food Network?
It's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.....
DH, me and both kid's love to watch this show!!
It makes us wished we had a family restaraunt.....both of our kids even want one!!
DH especially likes the pork bbq, rib and brisket places.....he enjoys doing that kind of stuff.....
I enjoy eating it!! LOL!!

She also enjoys "Doodlebug's" blog which is Tammy's (Country Girl At Home) own sweet DD.....

They've not actually even corresponded with each other, but they would find that they have alot in common..... :)

I think it's great that "Doodlebug's" blog is an extension of her writing and journaling that she does for her home-school work....DD asked if she could have a blog too, so I said we would do one on a trial basis and see how things went....

If some of you dear ladies would like to stop in for a visit and a kind word.....I know she'd really appreciate it...... :)

I have wanted to tell you all about a recent accomplishment of her's but she wanted to share it with you herself.......so I've had to keep it quiet! LOL!! You'll see in one of her posts what it is.......

A New Table In The Works.........

Lookie here!
DH just finished this in the shop a few hours ago!
This is going on the trailer for a show we're preparing for in March.....maybe I can have one in the future.......after DD get's a couple of things she would like her dad to make her....
Now......what color to paint it??
I always have the toughest time trying to chose a color for most of the pieces we make.....
Black does really well for us.....but I don't want everything that color......although it might look good......???????
Thought about staining the top, maybe.........and painting the bottom part.......?????
What would you all suggest?

Posting Issues.......???

Morning blog pals,
I don't know what's been up lately with my blog, but I seem to be having some posting issues.
Hopefully, it will "fix" itself....but it sure can be a bit discouraging....
I had posted yesterday morning and it still hasn't appeared as of this morning!!
It even had a new prim furniture pic!!!

Hope it's back to the way it should be soon................

I think I'm finally seeing a light at the end of this tunnel (with the head/chest-cold)!!
Yeah! PTL!!
Actually, I think I've had bronchitis along with the head crud..... :-(
Anyhow....I'm so glad I'm feeling better! :-)
Even got up before DH the "early bird" and fixed a homemade breakfast pie & sausage patties for breakfast and got DS's lunchbox ready for him to take to work........after that, I tossed in a load of clothes to wash, made the bed and washed up the morning dishes......

I think part of my feeling better is that the sun is shining so brightly this morning, even after a round of thunderstorms moved through last night.......I saw that colder temps are supposed to be moving in for tomorrow and the next few days.....I even heard a possibility of the "S" word in the forecast......Oh, but I don't want it........ now!
The grass in our yard and the pasture fields are beginning to really "green" up and I see that my daffodils and hyacinths are up a good 4-5 inches...... that's so nice to see!!
O.K......... I'd just as soon Spring would come on and get here!
I guess we'll just take what we get and be thankful!

Oh......Just thought I'd show you all one of the latest furniture pieces to go in the shop.....
I really don't know what you'd call it....a cabinet is all I can think of.....
It has multiple layers of paint on it with a heavyily distressed look.....for those that think
the grungier or older looking the better!
I'm beginning to really get into this more prim distressed look but I still lean toward the farmhouse and colonial looks as well.....I know.......weird huh?
But I think if it's done right it can still work together! Right?!
That usually requires alot of "tweaking" and "re-tweaking" on my part......in order for it to come together the way I want it too....
I plan on getting in more of the grungy wax covered (battery operated)flicker candles to put in the hogscraper and the lantern......just sold out of them and having a time getting more.....
Never thought those things would be that popular!

Well, I really need to get up and get busy doing something in the house or shop......
I did alot of laundry yesterday.....washed all of our sheets, bedding, pillows, all the afgahns and blankets that we cover up with in the LR as well as the regular washing.....de-germing I suppose!
I need to vacuum and dust today......and then I will probaly work on getting tax stuff in order......then when I've had enough of that......believe me it won't take much....lol......I'll head to the lil' shop to do some much needed pricing......

I appreciate all the advice and you've really helped!
I'm going to have DH help me find exactly where it's coming from........(since his nose is the one that knows! LOL!)
Then we'll begin the cleaning process......I remembered I had used a product for nursery stains when the kids were little.......so I did my one deep knee bend for the day, got down and I dug through the cabinets under the kitchen sink.......and what to my wondering eyes????
I found it! Waaaaayyyyy back in the back behind the empty Swiffer dusting cloths box, the wasp and hornet spray and what I believed to be wallpaper stripper......wonder how long that's been there??? Anyhow............It's called: Totally Toddler Nursery Stain Remover........(smells so wonderfully "baby"clean and fresh!)
It mentions on the bottle that it has an enzyme that eliminates nursery and pet odors!! I repeat........PET ODORS!!!! I did a search on it and read all kinds of interesting information and very positive testimonials with the same issue I'm dealing with.......the downside was that after calling our local Wally, I found out that they no longer carry it......Please tell me what is up with that?
Whenever there is a product I find, that does a good job and I really like.......they stop carrying it!!!!! ?????
So next, I called the 1-800 number on the company site and found out they also sell it at Toys R Us and Babies R Us......the closest one is about 40 miles or so from here....... :(
I was also told that I could go online and order it from a distibutor of theirs.....I think that's
probably my best bet...... :)

Even For One.......

On a very cold, snowy Sunday in February, only the pastor and one farmer arrived at the community church.
The pastor said, "Well, I guess we won't have a service today."
The farmer replied: "Pastor, even if only one cow shows up at feeding time, I feed it."

As I stayed home from church yesterday, do to being sick.......
I started looking at different sites with Christian humor......to give me a little lift and maybe a laugh......
I ran across this one site that had some really cute things and some "how true's"......
The one above is one of those "how true" ones.......
(Perhaps you may even relate other scripture to this).......but after reading it...I thought of the story in Luke.....so I looked it up again in the Bible and this is what it says:

"What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it?" (Luke 15:4)

"And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing." (Luke 15:5)

"And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them,
Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost." (Luke 15:6)

"I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety-nine just persons, which need no repentance." (Luke 15:7)

So......even for one..... :)
See how much the Heavenly Father loves us and desires a relationship with each one of us?!!

My Sweet Valentine Surprise!

My dear son came in with these beautiful tulips *for me* this morning while I was in the kitchen washing up the dishes! I was so pleasantly surprised!
I had told DD for them not to get us anything, to just save his money........she said she tried to tell him that but he said he was getting them anyway!!
Isn't that so sweet?? :)
He has a little gal he kinda likes.....he got her a lil' stuffed dog and a big chocolate Hershey Kiss..... he even bought his sister some Valentine candy.....
I was impressed that he remembered his ol' mom!! :-D

We have a very busy day ahead of us......sometime after lunch, the guys will be heading toward the church with the grill rolling right behind them......
They'll need to go get everything planned out and in order to start cooking.............
FOR ABOUT 100 PEOPLE!

They have worked so hard thus far trying to get it all together.....
I've prayed and prayed for everything to turn out and taste wonderfully and for them to have a great time of fellowship with one another......your prayers appreciated too...... :)
They've already made a couple trial runs at the blackberry cobbler.......wished I could taste it!!
My taste buds are asleep right now from this miserable head cold!! UGGGGGHHHH!!

It's Friday!! More Trunk Pics.........

Good evening, I hope everyone has had a good day today!
I feel a little bit better today.....thank you for the well wishes.....I'm trying to get over this
stuff before the Valentine banquet tomorrow night at church.....
DH and two of our friends/neighbors are grilling boneless pork loin chops on the big grill.
They are also fixing the baked potatoes,salad,rolls and dessert!
Blackberry, peach and cherry cobblers in dutch ovens and a pineapple cake in a huge cast iron skillet is the order for dessert......I'm bummed because I can't taste a thing with this stuffy head!!
You go guys!! :-D

I thought I'd show you a couple more trunks that I have.........
The top picture is one that originally had old canvas all over it........
I removed all of the canvas and cleaned the old glue residue off of it......
Then, all I did was paint the hardware black and apply a coat of marine urethane to the wood...... the marine urethane is used on boats.......the trunk used to be in front of our sofa and it was great for setting a glass of iced tea on with no coaster........no white rings!

The bottom picture is another one I did back some time ago......I just painted it almond color and did the trim in a antiqued old gold color. The trunk matched an old iron bed I had before the four-poster one....that was during my country/victorian phase.......
We have two more in other rooms and I have another large one (it has embossed metal that looks like alligator) in storage......not enough room for all of them!

I sure wished I had a new CS or Mercantile Gatherings to look at this evening......

Feeding A Cold And A New Sunny Day Project

Good afternoon blog pals!
I've been down with the sniffles today.....
Coughing, drippy nose, watering eyes and a headache.....
Went to town to take books back to the library, mail some letters, paid the water bill,
ran by the bank, to the grocery, then the pharmacy before heading home.....

Sure haven't been very productive today........took a nap on the sofa and was awakened by two or three phone calls.......no rest for the weary......lol!
I did manage to get myself up and put on a pot of homemade potato soup for supper.....
Is it feed a cold? I wondered if this was actually sinus and allergy issues instead of a cold.......

O.k........anyhow.......here's a future sunny day project.....
I absolutely love old trunks! I have been interested in them for several years now....
I have owned as many as 15.....at last count......but only have 6 right now......
Before I had a shop I would buy them really cheaply or trade for them.....fix them up...
then trade them off again for something I wanted more......
One of the things I traded a trunk and a few odd and ends for, was my old Hoosier cabinet that is in the shop for a display piece.......
This particular trunk (below) is the last one I bought from a friend's yard sale.....
I've always wanted a dome top or "camel back" style trunk like this....
It is a BIG ol' trunk!!!
I believe you could climb in it and shut the top!!!

My friend had it priced for $35.00.....so I snatched it up quick like!!
It still has the original tray w/ a compartment that I think was meant for storing a hat.....??
It has the old paper still inside.....does anyone know what the pics of the ladies in the lid are?
The outside is in GREAT shape.....that's paint that is flaking off of the very pretty embossed metal.....the wood bands are fine and the only thing I see missing is the leather to the handles.....
That's pretty common to see that gone on old trunks......someone had put heavy duty handles
on the sides, but I believe DH can get them off.....then he'll make some new handles out of
an old leather horse halter to go back where the originals once were.....

I'm wondering what to do to re-finish it???
I'd thought about stripping all the old paint off first then, painting it sort of a flat black or brown and leaving the wood slats natural with just a coat of satin poly on them.......then the decorative
hardware may get a antiqued brass technique.....I don't want anything shiny on it....
I also thought about painting the trunk a tan or cream color then going over it (wipe on and part off) with a dark stain to bring out the beautful detail in the embossed metal.......
So what would you all do?

Friday's Shopping

Friday, DH, DD & I decided to get out and do a little driving....

DH needed another Carhartt coat......so off we went to the outlet store...which is about an hour and a half drive.....

First, we stopped at one of my fave second hand shops for a little browsing around......

That's were I found the enamelware butter dish with cover.....it was $4.99....not a huge bargain.....but I really liked it...... :) I'm not sure if it's old and it didn't really matter to me, but the colors are unlike the newer ones I've seen.....

It is a much deeper blue (almost midnight) than what it shows in the picture......just lovely!

I found two or three other things there......but I will show them to you later....SORRY!!

After we left there, we stopped at a Zaxby's for lunch then on to the outlet store we went.....

DH found a Carhartt coat that he liked.....and I got one too.....

We had just bought DD one for Christmas, so she was not needing one.

Before we headed home, we stopped at a little prim shop.....yeah!

That is where I bought the two cards, the car freshener and the tart melts. (above pic #1)

Not a big day of purchasing.....but nice to get out for awhile.... :)

Oh, the tarts are "Butter Rum Crumbles" scented...... I popped one in the warmer in our living room and one in the master bathroom and the WONDERFUL aroma was all through the house in no time! They seemed to really last for a long time too......

That was the extent of our little trip.....

I was hoping to REALLY discover some fab finds, but it just wasn't my day for that.....

Well, maybe next time!

I'll just continue to watch you treasure hunters find your latest "gem"!!

Recipe For Holy Cow Cake

Here's the recipe for those of you that requested it &/or would like to try it....... :D

Holy Cow Cake

Ingredients:

1 devil's food cake mix or other type chocolate cake mix (prepare as directed on cake mix box)
8 ounces caramel topping
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
1 cup butterfinger candy bar, crushed
12 ounces frozen whipped topping, thawed
8 ounces cream cheese, softened

Directions:

Preheat oven as directed on cake mix box...

Mix cake mix as directed on the box.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan (I use a glass 9 x 12 sprayed with non-stick spray), smoothing out the top with the rubber spatula.

Bake the cake (as directed) until it springs back when lightly pressed with your finger and just starts to pull away from the sides of the pan about 35 to 38 minutes.....depending on your oven.

Immediately after removing cake from the oven, poke holes in the top of the cake with a drinking straw or chopstick. ( I use a wooden spoon handle)

Next, while cake is somewhat cooling, pour the caramel topping over the cake letting it run down into the holes. Repeat the same process with the sweetened condensed milk.

Measure out half of the crushed candy bars and sprinkle the pieces over the cake.

Place the whipped topping and softened cream cheese in a large mixing bowl and blend with an electric mixer on low speed until smooth and combined.
Gently spread the "frosting" over the candy covered cake.

Sprinkle the remaining crushed candy pieces on top.

Place the pan, uncovered, in the refrigerator to chill the cake for about 20 minutes before cutting into squares and serving.

Store this cake, covered with wax paper, in the refrigerator for up to 1 week (if it lasts that long!).
