(PLEASE READ BEFORE YA SCROLL DOWN FOR THE PICS) LOL!!Hi Blog Pals!
Wow! I can't believe Christmas is nearly here!
It's very cold outside today......
We've even had a few snow flurries here today!
That makes it even feel more like Christmas to me.....
Well, as my post title suggests.....I have something special to share with you!
Hang in there with me for a little bit first of all....
As you may or may not remember.......just in the last few weeks my Uncle had passed away rather unexpectedly(although he did have quite a few medical issues)....
He was my daddy's identical twin brother.....he had taught school for many, many years (was my English teacher my Freshman year in high school)....had at one time taught driver's ed, drove a school bus, directed school plays and so many other things that I'm still learning about today....As long as I can remember, my Uncle D had liked antiques and such....oh, how could I forget...he was also the family historian....he spent YEARS & YEARS tracing back the family history on my Dad's side. The amount of information he has compiled is really impressive!
I had been over at his house this week to help my dad load all of the genealogy binders, folders, files and books into his pick-up truck....
It was unreal how in-depth my uncle had traced the family's history....I kid you not, it was a small room full of filing cabinets and bookshelves dedicated all to the family tree!
It took my tall and stocky statured cousin....me and my dad to load one five drawer filing cabinet on a dollie and up into the pick-up bed from the front porch....it was totally full of files....then a two drawer cabinet....and countless binders, files and folders stacked up behind daddy's seat all the way passed the glass in the back window of his truck!
Whew!!!
I had such a wonderful time with my cousin (who now lives in the Phillipines) my dear Aunt (my Daddy & Uncle's sister) and then my Daddy... we looked at old Christmas cards from 1948, old war bond books, old pictures and such....then my cousin came out with a stack of old quilt pieces for my Aunt....they had names stitched on each "block" by the person that pieced it....most of them were done probably 50 years ago! It is supposed to be pieced altogether to make a "Friendship Quilt"....how cool is that?!!!
I had mentioned to my dad that I had always admired a piece of furniture in my Uncle's home...
He said that I should ask my cousin about it and what he was planning to do with it.....so I expressed my interest for the piece...
Then, after a little while passed my cousin told me he had something he wanted me to do.....I said, "Sure, what is it"???
He said, "I want you to go somewhere and get you some cardboard boxes and unload whatever is in the piece then it is your's".....
Oh my goodness!! I just about leaped in the air!!
I went and got the boxes and when I opened the doors to see what was in it....it was full of dishes!!
Platters, dish sets, cake pedestals & crystal stemware galore!!
I thought "Oh, boy this is gonna take awhile....."
It did....but it was so worth it!!
I wanted to wrap the dishes, but he said not to bother.....he and an old school friend were going to go through each thing piece by piece and sort and value them...
Well, I am so grateful and thankful to have something I've wanted for a VERY log time and the fact that I have something that belonged to my Uncle was just double the gift!
Thank you again cousin! I truly, truly mean it!
So, without further delay.....sorry for the babbling!!
I'm just so excited to show you all!!
Please comment or I'm going to feel like a bigger "goober" than I already do!!! LOL!
Here it is!!!
My own........
Antique Pie Safe!!!!I really do not care for the gold over the tin....I prefer a more original tin look.....so....
Yes, I've just began removing the gold from the punched tin panels.....
Here's what we have so far......I'm diggin' it!
Alot!

As you can see.....I've got more to go.....the piece itself had already been stripped and refinished....It's not a shiny finish (thankfully) so it will work as it is.....
The panels will have to be stripped on both sides.....'cause I want to leave at least one door open to display some goodies in of course!

Well, I will show you an "after" pic when I get it done.....another small dilema.....knowing where to put it.....rest assured, I will find a place! LOL!!
Wasn't that a very thoughtful thing for my cousin to do?
I am so happy to have it and so incredibly grateful!!!

Well, I will show you an "after" pic when I get it done.....another small dilema.....knowing where to put it.....rest assured, I will find a place! LOL!!
Do you think it would look terribly out of place in our master bedroom??
I'd really rather have it in my dining area....but I don't think it's going to fit there....
Need ideas please!
Need ideas please!
Thank you for reading my lengthy post!
Merry Christmas!

I am seriously choked up! What a treasure. This window for the "comments", was partly covering up the last words of your blog that I skipped! I was so quickly trying to tell you that I would SO put that in our Master Bedroom!
Anyway, Love it.
Hi BWP,
I think putting it in your master bedroom would be perfect. The piece is gorgeous and the tin looks so much better without the gold finish!!! Oh my, are you a lucky one! Is it a corner piece? It's hard to tell from the pics. I think it would be gorgeous filled with old quilts. I can't wait to see where and how you use it! Merry Christmas to you and yours my friend! Hugs, Loretta
Oh my, it's a beauty! I have seen
where they put them in bathrooms
for towels, but you might not want
to put it in there because of the
moisture....Will it fit in the dining room,
where you have a hand
made piece, at the end of your
counter? Where ever you put it,
I know it will be beautiful :)
Merry Christmas!

So sorry for your loss...
What a huge blessing! I love it! How are you getting the gold off? It looks awesome. I would not hesitate to put it in the bedroom...

Hi, what a great cupboard and the fact that is is from a favorite uncle is even more special. I agree, I think it can be used in any room. The bedroom would be great for storage.

What a wonderful family heirloom! I can't wait to see it when all the gold is removed and you have it just where you want it!!
I am in shock, that piece is amazing. What lucky you are and what generous is your cousin. It looks much better when all the gold is removed and share the pictures when you finish. Enjoy your new heirloom piece.
A beautiful family treasure! I'm sure your uncle would be so glad you have it.
What a beautiful piece of furniture! I am really liking the look beyond the gold. Can't wait to see it finished with it's display and all. Lucky you and I know your happy.
Your Uncle surely did not use a computer for his Genealogy. He has many...many hours of research there. I have been researching my family name since 2003 and just to let you know that I have hundreds and hundreds of hours put into it. You wouldn't believe the info that you can find, especially with today's technology...computers. I am very lucky today to keep all my info in the computer today with of course a back up on a hard drive. Just because if I lost everything I think I would die. I hope someone will treasure all the work he has put into searching your family tree.
Merry Christmas to you and your family :)
Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog. E-mail at macmadday@aol.com for more information about that craft show you were asking me about.
What a great treasure you have there! It's a beautiful piece and I can't wait to see it finished and filled with your treasures.
What a wonderful, treasured gift. It will be beautiful when you finish stripping the tin anywhere you end up putting it. Have fun! Dawn
Oh my, what a touching story! What a wonderful piece you ended up with! I love pie safes. It is a nice one too. They do work in the bedroom. I have one in my room and just use it for storage to put some of my junk in. You could still open the doors and display quilts or whatever in it. Just beautiful. What a wonderful Christmas prestent too!
I think it is a very fine piece and a real treasure to remember your Uncle by...I really think it would look great in the bedroom, filled with linen and quilts..oh yes, that would be perfect.
Hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas.
Molly

Lisa
It's wonderful! My pie safe has the same patterned tin panels. Congrats! I think wherever you put it will be great.
Christmas Blessings to you!
Me again!!
All of my stencils are several years old and many I got locally at shops that no longer exist or don't carry them. A while back, I think I posted about some sources online but I didn't tag the post and I have checked at least 20 and can't find it. When I have some more time, if I do find it, I'll let you know!!
And once again - I am sending you and email with some stencil sources!! I finally remembered where I had saved them! LOL
How generous of your cousin! It's not often that people are so generous anymore and clearly he knew what it meant to you and that you'd keep it in the family.. when my grandfather died there was one small thing I'd wanted but sadly he had re-married and she kept everything including family photos that were of no value to her (she sure showed her true colours then). So when I hear a story like yours I can't help but be very happy for you!
Seriously gorgeous! How very lucky you are.
